Eight-year-old Pan Dongzi is an ordinary child from a poor family, and he and his little friend Chun Yanzi look towards the southern mountains every day, hoping that their father, who has become a Red Army soldier, will soon arrive in Liuxi to eliminate Hu Hancin and avenge their grandmother and mother who were harmed by him. Learning that the Red Army is about to cross the southern mountains, Hu Hancin is panic-stricken, preparing to flee. At the big banyan tree at the village entrance, Dongzi and his mother are tied up and hanging from the tree.
