After years of devotion in a convent, Viridiana (played by Silvia Pinal) is about to take her final vows. Her aunt suggests that she visit her benefactor, Uncle Jaimé, before the ceremony. When Viridiana arrives at her uncle's country estate, Jaimé becomes emotionally attached to her because she resembles his late wife. As Viridiana prepares to return to the convent after a short stay, Jaimé pleads with her to wear his wife's wedding dress and proposes to her. After she rejects him, he instructs a maid to drug her. The next day, Jaimé commits suicide, and Viridiana decides to remain at the estate. Jaimé’s illegitimate son, José (played by Francisco Rabal), arrives with his girlfriend and immediately hires workers to cultivate the neglected land. Viridiana invites some homeless people and beggars to share the estate, caring for their needs and leading them in sincere prayers, attempting to provide them with divine assistance. José's girlfriend, feeling disheartened, announces their breakup and takes advantage of Viridiana and José's trip to the city, allowing the beggars and homeless to enter and create chaos in the estate. This film is the second part of Buñuel's religious trilogy and won the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival.
