In the 1970s Peking Opera troupe, the earnest and hard-working student Song Yu and the troupe leader's son Xing Tao have mutual feelings for each other. However, life is unpredictable; a sudden and disastrous fire changes the simple relationship between these budding lovers. Song Yu's father is imprisoned, and she is expelled from the troupe. Just as their romance seems to be rekindling, Song Dehai is released from prison. Previously honest and kind, he has formed a strong friendship with inmate Shi Gandan while incarcerated, learning a secret that years ago, Shi Gandan stole a bag from Xing Wenjiang, which contained a letter from Yu Xiaoxia to Xing Wenjiang. The death of his wife, along with his daughter's suffering, leaves Song Dehai feeling guilty, wronged, and resentful, twisted in his mindset, and he becomes an alcoholic. When he learns that Song Yu and Ye Kai are about to get married, Xing Tao, who has ventured into business, suddenly appears in front of Song Yu. His return leaves her feeling conflicted; she knows she still loves the man before her, but her wedding to Ye Kai is already set. With the two men, Song Yu struggles to make a decision, truly unsure of what to do. However, Xing Tao’s persistence and determination touch Ye Kai, who realizes Xing Tao loves Song Yu more than he does and decides to step back. Just as Ye Kai prepares to withdraw, their son suddenly becomes addicted to drugs, and the culprit is Li Zhenhong, who is the biological father of the son. This stems from the fire twenty years ago; when Li Zhenhong learns the truth, he frantically seeks revenge against Ye Kai. Ye Kai wishes to clarify everything to Song Yu, but she doesn’t believe him; she insists that she was the one who started the fire. In the end, the truth comes to light: Song Yu did not start the fire; she simply failed to extinguish it. There were people already in the props room, and two of them committed suicide. However, the bizarre nature of the fire caused panic and suspicion among the troupe members, leading them to use lies to protect themselves. Only Song Yu touches everyone around her with her authenticity and love—her lovers, colleagues, and family members. Her dedication to the art of Peking Opera defends its heritage and development, ultimately allowing her to be with her beloved Xing Tao and rescuing the troupe from its predicament.
