In the 1970s Peking Opera troupe, the earnest and hard-working student Song Yu and the troupe leader's son Xing Tao have mutual feelings for each other. However, life is unpredictable; a sudden and disastrous fire changes the simple relationship between these budding lovers. Song Yu's father is imprisoned, and she is expelled from the troupe. Just as their romance seems to be rekindling, Song Dehai is released from prison. Previously honest and kind, he has formed a strong friendship with inmate Shi Gandan while incarcerated, learning a secret that years ago, Shi Gandan stole a bag from Xing Wenjiang, which contained a letter from Yu Xiaoxia to Xing Wenjiang.
