In the late 1980s in China, in a seaside small town in the north, there is a large family led by the old veteran He Yuan. Besides the elderly couple He Yuan and Wu Suqin, there are also their four daughters and one son. He Yuan's biggest dream is to have all his daughters marry military husbands and for his son to find a virtuous wife, so that the whole family can live together in the He family courtyard. As He Yuan is facing retirement, he decides to immediately arrange for his second daughter He Fang to find a son-in-law to keep their long-standing residence. He Fang has to confess that she already has a good boyfriend. He Yuan discovers that her boyfriend is actually Xu Zhiyuan, the son of his old rival Xu Hao, and believes Xu Hao is trying to seize his old estate, so he firmly opposes the relationship. He Fang is forced to reveal that she is pregnant. After some twists and turns, He Yuan finally agrees to their marriage but demands that Xu Zhiyuan must live with the He family. The Xu family reluctantly agrees. Soon after, He Yuan discovers that his third daughter He Ting is in a close relationship with a guitar-playing troublemaker Liu Delin, and in a fit of rage, he violently forces the young couple to break up. He Ting plans to elope with Liu Delin. At a critical moment, she is pulled back home by her eldest sister He Bing and her brother-in-law Ma Tianlu. Liu Delin vows to come back and marry He Ting after making something of himself. Wu Suqin often seeks solace in a temple amidst these troubles, while He Yuan suspects that the master at the temple is Wu Suqin's lover from her youth. After a lot of effort to clarify the situation, the couple's feelings deepen, but their youngest son He Jian brings back bad news. He has been suspended from school for fighting and causing trouble, and ultimately has to take a job at a supply and marketing cooperative. Liu Delin returns wealthy, but He Yuan shows no interest in his money and still does not allow him to marry He Ting. Just as the eldest son-in-law Ma Tianlu is transitioning back to civilian life, Liu Delin sees an opportunity and arranges for Ma Tianlu to work at a factory as a small manager while he finally marries He Ting. Ma Tianlu ends up in jail because a worker under him committed suicide. The whole family relies on the second son-in-law Xu Zhiyuan, who works in the criminal police squad, to rescue him, only to find out that Xu Zhiyuan must recuse himself because of the familial connection. Xu Zhiyuan is helpless, and the family suspects he is avoiding involvement for his own career. The youngest daughter He Shan, especially heartbroken, cannot help but confide in her second sister He Fang that she has always admired her brother-in-law as a hero but now feels she misjudged him. In the end, the third son-in-law Liu Delin manages to clear Ma Tianlu's name through various connections and allows him to work at his company. He Shan's words create subtle changes between Xu Zhiyuan and his wife, making their relationship ambiguous, which Wu Suqin notices. He Shan chooses to leave for another place. He Jian has a relationship with a rural girl Lin Meijuan, who becomes pregnant, and under pressure from his father He Yuan, he has no choice but to marry her. Although He Shan is away, she cannot let go of her feelings for Xu Zhiyuan. He Fang notices this, wanting to discuss it with her husband, but Xu Zhiyuan always avoids the topic. He Fang’s health deteriorates, and it is discovered she needs a kidney transplant. Only He Shan’s kidney is suitable, and despite the danger, she decides to donate one to her sister out of guilt. To avoid burdening the family, He Fang quietly commits suicide, entrusting her sister to her husband. He Yuan refuses to agree, and just as He Shan struggles against this, Xu Zhiyuan unexpectedly says he won't marry He Ting and quickly marries another woman. He Ting opens a restaurant, taking advantage of her brother-in-law Ma Tianlu's cooking skills; meanwhile, Ma Tianlu is not adapting to Liu Delin’s company work, so he becomes the head chef at He Ting's restaurant. The eldest daughter He Bing sees her younger brother make a fortune in stocks and, out of jealousy, joins in, making a significant profit as the market soars. The whole He family gets swept up in the stock market frenzy. Who would have thought they would fall victim to swindlers, losing almost all their wealth. Liu Delin's coal mine also has an accident requiring a significant payout. In the end, he uses the money to repay He Jian's high-interest debts, nearly putting He Yuan’s big courtyard at risk. He Jian, in a fit of rage, injures someone and ends up in jail. However, his wife Lin Meijuan insists on waiting for him with their child. During He Yuan's 69th birthday, some people can no longer attend, but new life is born. He Yuan is still here, and the He family courtyard remains intact.
