The story takes place in London, England in 1936. Richie (played by Paul Bettany) is a banking entrepreneur with a bright future. However, his success in business cannot compensate for the shortcomings in his marriage, as his relationship with his wife Madeline (played by Olivia Williams) has long become a mere formality. Madeline's sister Tina (played by Helena Bonham Carter) comes to stay with them. Tina, an artist, quickly captures Richie's attention with her free-spirited behavior and whimsical personality.
