The story takes place in the 1980s in Yandu (Zigong). A plain and simple mother, Gao Lanying, walks into the home of Yu Mancang with her son, Daman. The family includes Mancang's two daughters and Mancang's mother. The hot-tempered Yu Mancang dies in a car accident, leaving behind a capricious old lady, the ever-dissatisfied Daman, the wild and carefree Erman, the obedient and understanding Sanman, and the suddenly appearing illegitimate son, Xiaoman.
