This series is based on a true story and tells the tale of Miep Gies (played by Bel Powley) assisting Otto Frank (played by Liev Schreiber) and his family in hiding to escape Nazi persecution during World War II. Miep, in her twenties, received a request from Otto to hide him and his family in her home to evade the Nazis' persecution of Jews at that time. Together with her husband Jan and others, Miep took on this heavy burden without hesitation; over the next two years, she cared for eight refugees, including Otto and Anne. Although the hiding plan failed in 1944, Miep preserved Anne's diary, written during their time in hiding, and returned it to the only survivor, Otto, after the war, organizing it into one of the most important documentary records thereafter. After World War II, Miep and Jan formed a social organization to assist returning people and worked to refute claims about diary forgery. Miep passed away in Amsterdam in 2010 at the age of 100. "More than 20,000 Dutch people helped hide Jews and others during those years when hiding was necessary. I just did what I could to help. So did my husband. It was nothing special." Miep once said.
