In East Germany in 1984, the entire society is shrouded in the oppressive rule of the Stasi. Agent Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) is ordered to wiretap the lives of playwright Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his girlfriend, actress Christa (Martina Gedeck). During the surveillance, Wiesler gradually becomes interested in their lives and begins to secretly help them. An article published in West Germany's Der Spiegel catches the attention of Wiesler's superiors, who suspect it was written by Dreyman, leading to Christina's arrest in hopes of extracting her husband's secrets.
