In 683 AD, Emperor Gaozong of Tang passed away, and his son Li Xian (played by Wang Hao) ascended the throne. The following year, Empress Dowager Wu (played by Yin Tao) established Li Dan (played by Tian Yupeng) as emperor and deposed Li Xian, making him the King of Luling, thus beginning the era of Wu Zetian's authoritarian rule. In September of the first year of the Shengshang era, Xu Jingye (played by Dong Yanlin) launched the Yangzhou rebellion against Wu Zetian's dictatorship. The Wu faction quickly dispatched troops to suppress the rebellion and executed the opposing court officials, including the trusted minister Pei Yan (played by Yang Hongwu), further solidifying their grip on power. Subsequently, she schemed to force the Tang royal family into opposition and gradually eliminated dissenters, executing anyone who posed a threat to her rule. To achieve her goal of becoming emperor, she appointed only her loyalists, abused tyrannical officials, and disseminated tales from ancient texts about women ruling the world. She also built the Palace of Divine Manifestations and created auspicious signs to promote her future claim to the throne. Five years after deposing Li Xian, on May 18 of the fourth year of Chuangong, Wu took the first step towards her dream of becoming the Empress with the title of "Holy Mother Divine Emperor"...
