The story takes place during the Song Dynasty. Minglan (played by Zhao Liying), the daughter of the scholar Sheng Hong from Yangzhou, possesses both beauty and intelligence, but unfortunately, her mother is a concubine, making her the target of jealousy from her stepmother and her minions. Following her mother's dying wish, Minglan suppresses her brilliance and seeks the protection of the old lady Sheng. During this time, she develops a relationship with Gu Tingye (played by Feng Shaofeng), the second son of the Ningyuan Marquis, who becomes her invaluable ally in life. Her mother’s passing does not grant Minglan peace; even with the old lady's protection, she still faces hidden dangers within the Sheng residence that threaten her safety at any moment.
