During the War of Resistance against Japan, the soldiers of the New Fourth Army in Jiangnan engaged in fierce battles with the Japanese invaders. The honored and wounded instructor Guo Jianguang (played by Tan Yuanshou) and 18 soldiers of the New Fourth Army were forced to recuperate in Shajiabang, patiently waiting for the moment they could return to the battlefield. Sister Aqing (played by Hong Xuefei) and Granny Sha (played by Wan Yiying) and other progressive villagers actively welcomed and cared for the wounded soldiers, while the soldiers did their best to help with farming work for the locals. The bond between the military and civilians was touching and inseparable. Before long, the Japanese began to raid, and Sister Aqing led her comrades to hide in the reeds. Frustrated by their failure, the Japanese instructed Hu Chuan Kui (played by Zhou Hetong), the commander of the fake revolutionary Loy and National Salvation Army, who was secretly collaborating with the Japanese, to besiege the wounded soldiers of the New Fourth Army. Encouraged by Chief of Staff Diao Deyi (played by Ma Changli) and the Japanese translator, Hu Chuan Kui set off for Shajiabang... The film is adapted from the Shanghai opera "Reed marsh fire seed."
