In 1999, Dan was in the 11th grade and transferred to St. Lawrence, an all-boys Catholic school. His father was undergoing treatment for advanced brain cancer at a nearby hospital; his mother had passed away when he was only seven. Dan had a close relationship with Brother Anurak, the school's dean and a psychologist. Brother Anurak tried to cure Dan's sleep paralysis. In his dreams, Dan saw a suffocating shadow that worsened when he shifted. Brother Anurak sought meaning in the dreams; he believed Dan had a complex regarding his father. On his first day of class, Dan caused a panic when he chose a seat belonging to a senior student, Trin, who had mysteriously disappeared a year ago by the lake behind the school. No one dared to sit at that desk or throw it away. He became acquainted with his classmate Jiu and roommate George, as well as Cham, a student from St. Mary's School attending the annual performance. As their bond grew closer, the four began to investigate Trin's disappearance while helping Dan free himself from the haunting shadow.
