This documentary will present the biography of one of the most magnificent species on the North American continent, an incredible, shaggy beast that plays a central role in many exciting, mythic, and even heart-wrenching stories. The story of the buffalo provokes much thought. In the shocking wave of rapid disappearance at the end of the 19th century, the last remaining large herds of buffalo were slaughtered. When this once-numerous animal was suddenly reduced to just a few hundred, Americans had to begin to realize: they could push a species to the brink of extinction. However, while the story of the buffalo represents the most dramatic demonstration of our ability to destroy the natural world, it also provides compelling evidence that we have the power to bring a species back from the edge of extinction. The least known part of the buffalo's history is what Americans did after realizing they had nearly driven this animal extinct, as a way to make amends. Today, there are over 350,000 buffalo in the United States, most of which are descendants of the 77 animals from the initial five groups in the early 20th century. This story—never before told on television—is as dramatic and gripping as the story of the buffalo’s decline, and equally full of unforgettable characters. Directed and executive produced by Ken Burns, written by Dayton Duncan, and produced by Julie Dunfey and Burns, "American Buffalo" is set to air on PBS on October 16 and 17, 2023. (Duration: 4 hours)
