This drama is adapted from the novel of the same name by author, science editor, and copywriter Bonnie Garmus. The story takes place in the early 1950s, a time when society generally believed that women belonged in the home rather than the workplace. Elizabeth Zott (played by Brie Larson) aspires to be a scientist in a male-dominated world. She works as an assistant in a laboratory to renowned scientist Calvin Evans (played by Lewis Pullman), and the two share an extraordinary chemistry. However, as Elizabeth discovers she is pregnant and is subsequently fired from the lab, she sets aside her dreams while uncovering the unique cleverness of a single mother. Elizabeth accepts a job as the host of a television cooking show, where she begins to educate neglected housewives and the suddenly attentive men of the nation on much more than just recipes, all while longing to return to the field she truly loves: science.
