In the years around 1935, Japanese imperialism intensified its aggression against our country. At a time of unprecedented national crisis, Chiang Kai-shek still insisted on the policy of "stabilizing internal issues before resisting foreign threats." General Zhang Xueliang was forced to "suppress the communists," and after suffering repeated defeats on the battlefield in northern Shaanxi, he faced criticism from Chiang Kai-shek, prompting him to urgently seek a way out. During the Kuomintang's "Five Full" Congress, he and General Yang Hucheng made contact with our party through progressives Du Chongyuan and Tian Wenhao. After returning to Xi'an from Nanjing, Zhang Xueliang conducted talks with our party's Comrade Zhou Enlai in Yan’an, facilitated by Gao Fuyuan, a former Northeast Army commander released by our troops. General Zhang decided to persuade Chiang Kai-shek to stop the civil war, arguing for a united front against Japan from the perspective of national survival. Meanwhile, Yang Hucheng received a handwritten letter from Chairman Mao sent by a messenger. However, their activities had already been noted and reported to Nanjing by Chiang Kai-shek's agents, Li Daquan and Zheng Guangqing, who were stationed in Xi'an. To counter the rampant activities of the spies, Zhang Xueliang ordered the raid on the Kuomintang's Shaanxi provincial party headquarters. This incident facilitated the cooperation between Zhang and Yang and caused a stir for Chiang Kai-shek, who was in Nanjing overseeing the resolution of the "Two Guangxi Mutiny." In early December 1936, Chiang Kai-shek visited Xi'an and stayed at the Huaqing Pool in Lintong. Zhang Xueliang repeatedly urged Chiang but was met with rejection. Chiang limited him to three days to respond whether he would continue the orders to "suppress the communists"; otherwise, he would relocate Zhang and Yang's troops from Shaanxi. On December 12, 1936, Zhang and Yang were forced to implement "military advice" to Chiang, leading to the shocking "Xi'an Incident." After the incident, our party, at the invitation of Generals Zhang and Yang, sent a delegation led by Zhou Enlai to Xi'an. From the perspective of national survival, Zhou persuaded Zhang and Yang, which led to Chiang Kai-shek's acceptance of the "Eight Proposals" for anti-Japanese national salvation. The "Xi'an Incident" was peacefully resolved, and the anti-Japanese war entered a new stage.
