In the mid-19th century, Italy was under the harsh rule of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. To liberate his homeland, the light cavalry officer Angelo (played by Olivier Martinez) conspires to instigate a rebellion to overthrow the colonial rule, but his plans are leaked, forcing him to flee to France. Betrayed by a childhood friend, Angelo becomes the target of Austrian spies in France. During his escape, Angelo inadvertently stumbles into a plague-infested area in France, where despair abounds, and people are almost driven mad. The locals believe that Angelo has brought the poison, making him an object of pursuit once again. One day, Angelo accidentally falls from a rooftop into an attic where he encounters Paulina (played by Juliette Binoche), a woman who has lost her husband. Upon learning of Paulina's difficult situation, Angelo resolves to help her find her husband. As they navigate through the plague area, Paulina unfortunately contracts the disease...
