During the Shengli period, Wu Zetian governed the country with exceptional strategy and wisdom, bringing peace and prosperity to the nation. Although the power struggle between the Li and Wu families in the court remained intense, Wu Zetian maintained her calm and composure. However, a sudden murder incident pulled Wu Zetian, who had long resided in the palace, out of the capital and into a perilous and bizarre experience, forcing the long-retired Dī Rénjié back into the political struggle for power... One night, A Xiang, a palace maid who had served Wu Zetian for many years, attempted to assassinate the Empress but was killed in the process. Yet, Wu Zetian, still shaken, did not believe A Xiang was the true culprit. She issued orders overnight for the Dali Temple to swiftly identify the real mastermind behind the assassination attempt. Little did they know, just as the investigation was beginning, Doctor Xu was found hanged in his room, and A Xiang's body mysteriously vanished. Wu Zetian realized the gravity of the situation and swiftly wrote two imperial edicts, summoning Dī Rénjié back to the palace to solve the crisis. Dī Rénjié, who had resigned and returned home, was busy preparing a wedding for his longtime subordinate, Tao Gan, along with his assistants Qiao Tai and Ma Rong, when the Governor of Taiyuan, Ji Zhong, arrived in Di Village, accusing Tao Gan and Ma Rong of being the murderers of a messenger sent from the capital. Wu Zetian, anxious over the lack of news from Dī Rénjié, feigned illness and needed rest, temporarily handing over imperial power to her son Li Zhe and her nephew Wu Sansi. She set out with Shangguan Wan'er and her male lover Zhang Changzong to search for Dī Rénjié. After evading pursuers along the way, Wu Zetian endured great hardships to finally arrive at Di Village, only to be deceived with the news that Dī Rénjié, currently idling at home, was the one plotting to harm her... Understanding Dī Rénjié deeply, Wu Zetian recognized this was a trap. In the Dī household, the Empress and Dī Rénjié engaged in a long conversation throughout the night, both sensing that a sinister figure was hiding behind the case. Faced with danger, Dī Rénjié accepted Wu Zetian's appointment to investigate the murderer. The next day, at a banquet to welcome Wu Zetian, the honest and simple Qiao Tai suddenly went mad, and Wu Zetian nearly lost her life amidst the chaos. Through the ensuing bloody struggle, Dī Rénjié finally discovered that Tao Gan's bride, Dongfang Yu, was actually a killer sent by their adversaries. Confronted with a complex series of murders, Dī Rénjié cunningly devised a plan to expose the mastermind behind the assassination — Governor Ji Zhong of Taiyuan. While interrogating Ji Zhong, Dī Rénjié uncovered new doubts, yet the arrogant Wu Zetian insisted on executing Ji Zhong and immediately returning to the capital. Unable to alert the authorities, Dī Rénjié had no choice but to organize the villagers to protect the Empress on their journey back to the capital. However, midway, Wu Zetian and Wan'er were kidnapped, and Dī Rénjié was injured while protecting them. News of Wu Zetian's plight reached the capital, causing chaos in the court. Zhang Changzong returned with an imperial edict, demanding the crown prince surrender power to Wu Sansi; meanwhile, Shangguan Wan'er appeared at the crown prince's residence, accusing Zhang Changzong of falsely transmitting imperial edicts and conspiring with Wu Sansi to rebel. General Zhang Jianzhong took his troops to the capital to uphold the Li family's rule for the sake of the people. Princess Taiping pressured her weak brother to cede power to her several times. Just as various factions prepared for conflict, a messenger arrived with Wu Zetian's imperial edict, revealing that the Empress had been rescued by Dī Rénjié and returned to the capital. The weathered Wu Zetian still carried her imperial majesty; she quietly reclaimed her power and commanded all factions to return to the palace for instructions, for Dī Rénjié had already uncovered the true instigator behind the assassination plot.
