Long Shaoyu is the only son of the wealthy merchant Long Wu in Yangzhou during the Qing Yongzheng period. He is naturally active, mischievous, and clever, making him quite lovable. He has a betrothed wife, Hongmei, whom Shaoyu is unwilling to accept as a daughter-in-law of the Long family; however, she is deeply in love with him and constantly helps him out of difficulties, acting as his guardian angel.
