The story takes place in the mid-Ming Dynasty. Jinyiwei Yang Ao (played by Peng Jingci) and imperial physician Li Heling (played by Huang Zhizhong) were originally senior brothers in the same sect. When Yang Ao falls in love with his senior brother Heling's fiancée, Nishang (played by Lv Yi), he frames his brother for the murder of Concubine Hui.
