In 1912, Xiang Jingyu studied at the Provincial First Women's Normal School and returned to her hometown to establish the Xupu Girls' School after graduation. Later, she went to France for work-study, forming the "Xiang-Cai Alliance" with Cai Hesen. In 1921, Xiang Jingyu returned to China and was elected as a central committee member and the first women's minister at the Second National Congress of the Party, and at the Third National Congress, she was elected to the Central Politburo. She then served as the secretary of the Central Women's Movement Committee of the Kuomintang. In 1925, she led and organized the May Thirtieth Movement, which shocked the world. After the failure of the Great Revolution, Xiang Jingyu insisted on staying in Wuhan and bore the heavy responsibilities of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party. In 1928, she was arrested by the French police. She was brutally martyred on May 1 of the same year, at the age of only 32.
