From the Horqin Banner in Mongolia, the beautiful Da Yu'er (played by Ning Jing) has been hailed as "the most beautiful woman in Manchuria" since childhood. She was childhood sweethearts with Prince Dorgon (played by Ma Jingtao), the younger brother of Emperor Hong Taiji (played by Liu Dekai), and they promised to be together for life. However, she was taken as a concubine by Hong Taiji and became known as the Noble Consort of Yongfu Palace, establishing a relationship as uncle and aunt with Dorgon, yet their feelings remained unresolved. When Hong Taiji suddenly passed away, a fierce struggle for the throne ensued. Dorgon, who held military power, became the greatest rival of Hong Taiji's eldest son, Hooge, but unexpectedly supported Da Yu'er's son, Fulin (played by Yan Kun), to ascend the throne, making Da Yu'er the Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang. For her son's throne and the foundation of the Qing dynasty, Empress Xiaozhuang maintained a complex relationship with Dorgon. To preserve the reputation of the Empress Dowager, their long-standing passionate feelings were left with only regrets of friendship transcending into propriety. Dorgon died young, and Xiaozhuang could only bury her pain deep inside while doing everything to assist the reign of Emperor Shunzhi. After Shunzhi faced the death of his beloved consort, Dong Eshi (played by Shu Chang), he began to entertain thoughts of abdicating. Out of necessity, Xiaozhuang appointed Shunzhi's son, Xuanye, as emperor, who would reign as Kangxi, ushering in a prosperous era for the Qing dynasty.
