The story begins in the early 1980s, in a coastal city in the north. Liu Ru Yan and Wan Shu Lin are both workers at a state-run dyeing and printing factory. They have been married for five years but still have no children, which has caused a lot of arguments between them. Wan Shu Lin scolds Liu Ru Yan, calling her a "chicken that doesn't lay eggs," and even threatens to divorce her and find another woman who can have children. Liu Ru Yan feels very wronged and sad, and cries to her younger sister. Her sister Liu Ru Mei works in a hospital and sympathizes with her, suggesting that they both undergo medical examinations to find out the cause of infertility. However, at that time, such examinations were not common, and Wan Shu Lin, being proud, is stubborn and refuses to go. Liu Ru Yan then tries some folk remedies to help conceive, and indeed, she seems to be pregnant. Wan Shu Lin is extremely happy. To take care of his wife, he even considers giving up a rare training opportunity. Liu Ru Yan advises him to prioritize work, saying she has neighbors and her sister to look after her, so it will be all right. Sure enough, when Wan Shu Lin returns from a business trip, he learns that Liu Ru Yan has given birth to a baby girl named Jia Ni. He is very disappointed because he had only wanted a son. Just then, the country has announced family planning as a national policy, strictly controlling the second child, extinguishing his hopes for a son completely. In his frustration, he neglects Liu Ru Yan and their daughter, spending all night playing cards and drinking, and even fooling around with a female worker named He Li Na. Unable to bear it any longer, Liu Ru Yan resolutely leaves him with their daughter. Later, through a neighbor and Hao Wei Dong from the factory's design office, she meets Bai Shao Xing, an engineer from the electric machinery factory. When they first meet, Liu Ru Yan states that she does not want to find a stepfather for her daughter; he must agree to raise her as his own daughter and promise they will not have children again for her to agree to date him. Bai Shao Xing readily agrees, but unexpectedly, not long after they get married, Liu Ru Yan discovers she is pregnant! Bai Shao Xing is from an ethnic minority, and according to policy, they can have this child, but should they have the child? Ultimately, under her husband’s encouragement, she puts aside her worries and checks into the maternity ward, successfully giving birth to a boy. In the same ward is a woman named Hua Hong Ying, who has just given birth to a girl and is a teacher. She mentions that she previously had a daughter but lost her in the hospital, hence she had to have another child. Since it's not her first pregnancy, her body recovers quickly, and she takes good care of Liu Ru Yan, being very fond of Jia Ni. Her husband Yang Ming Liang is an official in the electromechanical bureau, and he happens to be Bai Shao Xing's direct superior, so the two get along well. However, Liu Ru Yan avoids Hua Hong Ying and her husband at all costs, leaving Bai Shao Xing puzzled. He doesn't know that Jia Ni, whom Liu Ru Yan raises as her daughter, is actually the baby girl Hua Hong Ying and Yang Ming Liang lost in the hospital! Originally, when Liu Ru Yan thought she was pregnant, she went to the hospital for an examination, but the doctor told her it was a false pregnancy. Liu Ru Yan can hardly bear this blow and, fearing her husband would find out the truth, seeks help from her sister. Liu Ru Mei suggests that she pretend to be pregnant and later adopt an abandoned baby. Soon, as the time to "give birth" approaches, she still hasn't found a child. In desperation, she takes advantage of the commotion during a breastfeeding session to randomly take a baby. From the wristband the child is tied with, Liu Ru Yan learns the child's mother's name is Hua Hong Ying. She has kept that wristband carefully. Now, fate has led her to encounter them. Although they are unaware of the truth and still treat her and her daughter warmly, she feels guilty and doesn’t dare let her daughter get close to this family. Fortunately, the secret buried in her heart has remained undisclosed. Many years pass, and both she and Bai Shao Xing have retired, with their children grown. After Jia Ni graduates from graduate school, she starts working at Yang Ming Liang's company and is in a romantic relationship with Hao Ning, Hao Wei Dong's son. Life is peaceful and leisurely. But one day, her ex-husband Wan Shu Lin, who has not been in contact for many years, shows up at the door, questioning Jia Ni's origins. It turns out that Wan Shu Lin has been married to He Li Na for many years without having any children, and they ended up divorced, while He Li Na quickly had a son after remarrying. She has always had doubts about this. Now that Wan Shu Lin knows her new husband has died, he proposes remarrying her, but she insists he must undergo a medical examination at the urology department. The test results show that Wan Shu Lin has congenital fertility issues! Thus, the origins of Jia Ni become a significant problem. The cunning He Li Na immediately thinks of using this to blackmail Liu Ru Yan, and demands a "hush money" of fifty thousand yuan from both Liu Ru Yan and the man they assume is the "lover," Hao Wei Dong. Hao Wei Dong is utterly confused and urgently contacts Liu Ru Yan. Liu Ru Yan realizes that innocent good people have been brought into this, but she cannot reveal Jia Ni's true origins, so reluctantly agrees to their demands and takes out fifty thousand yuan from their modest savings to give to He Li Na. Bai Shao Xing notices that his wife's mood and behavior are abnormal and learns from their son Bai Shan that she has touched their family's savings. However, trusting and caring for his wife, he quietly observes without probing into the matter. A storm seems to have calmed. Unexpectedly, Yang Ming Liang's daughter Hua Mei (whom Jia Ni is biologically related to) becomes depressed after falling for Hao Ning, who doesn’t reciprocate, and while driving under the influence, she gets into a serious accident and is critically injured. The grandmother, who usually dotes on her granddaughter, has another mental episode. Hua Hong Ying and Yang Ming Liang must care for both the young and the old and are almost at their breaking point. Under such circumstances, Liu Ru Yan, unable to comply with her self-imposed restrictions, rallies her whole family to help the Yang family through this crisis. In the process, she learns about the pain the Yang family suffered after losing their child, and her conscience is deeply shaken. She contemplates confessing everything several times, but out of fear of legal consequences and losing the happiness she has struggled to achieve, she hesitates to reveal the truth. As the Yang couple gets closely acquainted with Liu Ru Yan and her daughter, they deeply sense their kindness and the profound bond between them, yet they also notice some inconsistencies. Especially when they learn that to give Hua Mei a blood transfusion, Jia Ni's blood type happens to match Hua Mei's rare blood type perfectly while being inconsistent with Liu Ru Yan and Wan Shu Lin's blood types, they nearly conclude that Jia Ni is indeed their lost daughter! However, they really do not want to believe that the kind Liu Ru Yan could do such a thing, and they also suspect that Jia Ni's father may be someone else, deciding to maintain silence. With meticulous care from Hua Hong Ying and her husband, Hua Mei comes out of danger, but when she learns she will be confined to a wheelchair, she rejects food and treatment in despair. Jia Ni, knowing her deep feelings for Hao Ning, brings him to visit Hua Mei and secretly tells her that if she can recover, she can give up Hao Ning and set him free. Hua Mei gathers her courage to live again and resumes eating and treatment. The grandmother's condition also stabilizes and she wakes up. At this point, because He Li Na wants to extort that "hush money," Wan Shu Lin, in a fit of anger, spills the beans about his infertility and that Jia Ni is Liu Ru Yan's daughter with another man to Bai Shao Xing. This is like a bolt from the blue for Bai Shao Xing; he can hardly believe that the wife he loves and has lived with for many years would do such a thing! He demands Liu Ru Yan to explain the truth, or he will divorce her. Liu Ru Yan does not speak a word but takes care of the arrangements and attempts to commit suicide as a means of atonement. Fortunately, she is rescued. In her suicide note, people learn the truth: Jia Ni is actually Yang Ming Liang and Hua Hong Ying's daughter, whom she took from the hospital baby carriage all those years ago, with the wristband as proof. How should Liu Ru Yan be viewed and treated? This becomes a test for everyone. Especially for Liu Jia Ni, how should she treat the woman who has raised her for over 20 years and forcibly separated her from her biological parents for more than 20 years? For the Yang family, Liu Ru Yan's actions have indeed caused them immense pain and violated the law, but after more than 20 years and a deep understanding of Liu Ru Yan as a person, should they still file a lawsuit and pursue her criminal responsibility? In the hospital room, Liu Ru Yan lies in bed quietly awaiting her fate’s judgment. Outside the room, people discuss, are agitated, and argue endlessly about this...
