The story begins in the 1970s. In a military compound, a group of soldiers' children live a carefree life. Zhang Weiping (played by Duan Yihong) is recognized as the bad boy, while his brother Zhang Xiangping (played by Liu Xiaofeng) is the idol of the kids. One day, while visiting home, Xiangping suddenly receives orders to return to duty. Inspired by him, Qiao Jianxin (played by Wu Yue) enlists in the army, but soon after, news arrives that Xiangping has died on the front lines of the Vietnam War. Determined to avenge his brother, Weiping uses improper means to get to the front line, only to be sent back home by the military and becomes a young educated youth sent to the countryside. Xiangping is not dead; he returns with honors, much to Jianxin's surprise. Later, due to political reasons, Xiangping is imprisoned, yet Jianxin remains loyal. Liu Shuanglin (played by Liao Fan), a rural soldier, abandons his pursuit of Li Yaling to court compound soldier Fang Wei (played by Che Xiaao). Meanwhile, Weiping, who is committed to rooting himself in the countryside, gives up his college spot to the disappointed Li Yaling (played by Zhang Jingjing)...
