In 1927, white terror engulfed China. During a secret meeting at a café, underground Communist Party members Xia Feng and Zhu Lei were ambushed by Kuomintang agents led by Gao Yang. Zhu Lei's twelve-year-old daughter, Zhu Meiyun, witnessed her father's death before her eyes. Xia Feng was seriously injured and captured; his fiancée, progressive student Lu Mei, forcibly stifled her grief and hurriedly fled with Zhu Meiyun.
