In his early twenties, Ah Xi (played by Ren Zhong) has an IQ of only nine years old; he is mildly intellectually disabled. However, his mother (played by Mi Xue) tells him, "Everyone is born to walk a path, a very long path in life. I think if one walks for a long time, they must get tired. If everyone can hold hands and walk together, talk and play games, wouldn't they feel less tired?" This encourages Ah Xi to walk happily every day. His mother, Ah Ping (played by Mi Xue), doesn't want to hurt Ah Xi's feelings, so she hides the fact that his biological father abandoned him. She tirelessly raises Ah Xi alone; their life is difficult, but under his mother's love, they live a pure and peaceful life, filled with happiness. An accidental loss, however, changes Ah Xi's life forever.
Ah Xi becomes a vagrant in a strange town and encounters an eccentric, mute old man (played by Li Li Qun) who pulls a rickshaw. This man has a peculiar personality and a bad temper, and no one wants to get close to him. The townspeople refer to him as "Old Bitter Melon." It turns out he has an unmentionable past; over twenty years ago, he was a happy musician with a wife and son. Once, to help a friend, he left his son alone at home, and when he returned, he helplessly watched his son perish in a fire, which also damaged his vocal cords. The blow from losing his son led to further misunderstanding from his wife, who believed he was unfaithful. Unable to speak up or clear his name due to someone else hiding the truth for their own protection, their marriage fell apart. Carrying this regret, "Old Bitter Melon" no longer believes in love, affection, or hope among people.
However, the innocent and lovable Ah Xi breaks into "Old Bitter Melon’s" isolated world, and despite their communication challenges, their relationship develops like that of a father and son. Ah Xi interacts with others using simple language and a pure heart, demonstrating persistence and devotion to love. This makes "Old Bitter Melon" reflect, "If Ah Xi can do it, why can’t we ordinary people?" The people around them also feel touched; influenced by Ah Xi, Teacher Ye Lan confronts her quarreling parents, and the unsuccessful photographer Tian Jing regains his confidence. "Old Bitter Melon" faces his past anew...
During the process of searching for his mother, two romantic relationships occur in Ah Xi's life. The first is his affection for music teacher Ye Lan, who reflects his mother’s care and gives him warmth and hope. However, Ye Lan loves Tian Jing, leading her to refuse Ah Xi and leaving him to experience heartbreak. During his days of sorrow, he encounters a rebellious girl named Dong Dong, who often flies kites. She initially enjoys teasing Ah Xi, but eventually, a subtle romance develops between them, which is opposed by many.
In the end, after enduring many hardships, the mother and son reunite, but Ah Xi faces a crisis that separates him between life and death...
