During the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Tang, Yan Liben inadvertently encounters the wrongful imprisonment of Di Renjie (played by Ren Jialun). After helping him to escape, Yan discovers that Di is a brilliant detective. Coincidentally, the emperor orders him to investigate a case at Gan Ye Temple, so he decides to bring Di Renjie along. At the temple, Di Renjie solves a mysterious case, averting a major disaster in the Buddhist community, and forms a connection with Wu Meiniang. Di Renjie astonishes everyone and is dispatched by the emperor to Bingzhou, where he repeatedly solves bizarre cases and earns the title of divine judge. During this time, there are reports of ghost soldiers from previous dynasties committing murder. Di Renjie investigates and uncovers links to hidden treasures of the former dynasty and the rebellious intentions of Prince Li Tai, but the evidence is destroyed, hindering his progress. Meanwhile, a case arises involving Wu Meiniang murdering her own daughter and framing Empress Wang for it, prompting the emperor to summon Di Renjie back to Chang'an for investigation. Guided by clues from Wu Meiniang, Di Renjie solves the case and discovers the hidden treasures at Li Tai's residence, providing undeniable evidence of the prince's conspiracy. Di Renjie also realizes that the person who had enlightened him during his previous investigative challenges was actually Wu Meiniang, leaving him feeling that her depth and ambitions far exceed his imagination. Soon after, Emperor Gaozong falls ill, calling for Wu Meiniang to attend court, together referred to as the Two Saints presiding over the court.
