The drama tells a "Infernal Affairs"-style story between a Communist underground party member and a Kuomintang intelligence officer over a span of 7 years. Xú Shàoqīng and Liú Yǒngqiáng are classmates and close friends from the "Sanhe Radio School," serving respectively in the Communist underground party in Shanghai and the Kuomintang Military Bureau. They each excelled in their roles, repeatedly providing crucial intelligence to their organizations and contributing to the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan. With the onset of the Liberation War, Xú Shàoqīng and Liú Yǒngqiáng became unknown rivals. They cleverly navigated through severe scrutiny directed at themselves time and again, finding ways to survive! Eventually, they began to suspect that the other was the undercover agent they had been trying to eliminate. They set up intricate traps, trying to reveal each other’s identities. Xīn Qíng is Xú Shàoqīng’s superior and also his lover, but due to work discipline restrictions, they have always kept this hidden from their organization. To uncover the spies hidden within, and to obtain crucial intelligence for the Huaihai battlefield, Xīn Qíng reluctantly orders Xú Shàoqīng to marry Zhāng Jiāwén, the daughter of his military intelligence superior. However, Xīn Qíng did not anticipate that Zhāng Jiāwén would soon become pregnant. Although Liú Yǒngqiáng was lurking within the Communist underground party, he secretly harbored feelings for his superior, Xīn Qíng. In the end, to prevent his own identity from being exposed, he plots to kill her. On the eve of Shanghai's liberation, Xú Shàoqīng and Liú Yǒngqiáng finally engaged in a life-and-death struggle. To protect her lover and send out intelligence, Xīn Qíng sacrificed her own life. Xú Shàoqīng outsmarted and overcame Liú Yǒngqiáng, witnessing the dawn of the new China. Guō Xiǎofēng plays Huáng Zhè, a staunch Communist party member who has long led fellow underground party colleagues in a battle of wits against the enemy.
