In the early 1930s, the Fang, Han, Zheng, and Yan families living in Shanghai are intertwined through the marriages of their children, leading to a series of poignant and heart-wrenching stories. The Fang family is a prominent household in the area. After the early death of Mr. Fang, the capable and astute Mrs. Fang took charge of family affairs. Their eldest son, Fang Zhenya, is a manager at a shipping company in Shanghai and, in his forties, remains unmarried. Due to his sincerity, honesty, and inability to express himself well, he holds no significant position in the family. The younger son, Fang Xingya (played by Tang Zhenzong), who has studied abroad, is the deputy director of a prestigious hospital in Shanghai and enjoys a high social standing and reputation locally. He is deeply favored by his mother at home and is a man of his word. His wife, Han Yunqing (played by Jiang Shan), was wrongfully imprisoned for six years on suspicion of being involved in a murder case. For the sake of the Fang family's reputation and the future of their children, she has no choice but to divorce Xingya, leaving behind two children, Panpan and Dudu. To spare the children from the stigma of having a “murderer” for a mother, the Fang family deceives them into believing that their mother is dead… The Han family is less affluent. Mr. Han supports the family by carrying burdens and selling sugar figurines. Although Mr. Han does not believe that his daughter would commit murder, he feels that her situation has brought shame to him, making it hard for him to hold his head high in front of the Fang family and others. His son, Han Yuntian (played by Zhong Hanliang), is Han Yunqing's brother. He firmly believes that there must be other circumstances surrounding his sister's imprisonment, and he vows to uncover the truth behind the case. To this end, he chooses to study law and works hard to learn legal knowledge… The Zheng family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Zheng, who own a small dyeing business. They have two daughters; the elder, Yingjia, is a small office worker and unmarried. The younger, Sijia, is a student at a university and is dating Han Yuntian. However, she suffers from epilepsy since childhood and keeps it a secret… The more she loves Yuntian, the less she wants to marry him. At the same time, Mr. Zheng looks down on the Han family and is reluctant to marry his daughter to Yuntian. The Yan family consists of just a father and daughter. Mr. Yan is a renowned lawyer, well-versed in legal principles, and values ethics and character, particularly the integrity required of a lawyer. Although he is employed by the Fang family, he does not want to compromise his conscience; in Yunqing's case, he speaks out righteously and works hard to defend her, helping her receive a reduced sentence. He also refuses to handle the divorce case between Yunqing and Xingya for the Fang family. His only daughter, Kaizhen, has been hurt by a failed first love and has been quietly healing at home. Later, she meets Yuntian.
