In June 1946, Chiang Kai-shek tore up the "Ceasefire Agreement" and launched a full-scale civil war. On September 29, the Kuomintang attacked Yanqing with a military force and attempted to occupy Zhangjiakou. On October 3, the militia member Dong Cunrui, who had just joined a regular unit, arrived in Yanqing and intercepted the enemy advancing from Badaling on the eastern front. In order to cover the retreat of all the soldiers in his company who had completed their mission, Dong Cunrui's squad leader, Communist Party member Luo Zhiying, voluntarily led the soldiers of the sixth squad to cover the company's retreat. The cover mission was extremely difficult, and during the breakout, the squad leader sacrificed himself to protect Dong Cunrui. Before dying, Luo Zhiying told Dong Cunrui to "stay alive and advance!" Dong Cunrui, Wang Haishan, and Sun Daguang miraculously broke through encirclement and returned to their unit's station. Dong Cunrui was assigned by the company commander to the cooking team to reflect on the mistakes he made during the battle. Unexpectedly, Dong Cunrui was very lucky and seized a large amount of enemy weapons using a carrying pole, achieving great merit and returning to the sixth squad. To reorganize the sixth squad, Dong Cunrui had a fierce conflict with Wang Haishan, the newly appointed squad leader, who, after returning from injury, established an elite fifth squad. Under the suggestion of his admired Company Commander Zhao, Dong Cunrui decided to compete with Wang Haishan and the fifth squad; he finally formed the sixth squad centered around Sun Daguang, Liu Yulin, Zhi Zhenbiao, Zhu Sanliang, Niu Yuhe, and Zou Ergou. Due to his personality, he did not initially get along well with his squadmates, and the sixth squad resembled a scattered mass, derisively called by Wang Haishan as the "dough squad." The instructor also questioned Dong Cunrui's leadership abilities. In Wang Haishan's heart, how could the sixth squad and Dong Cunrui possibly stand on the same starting line as the fifth squad? This was further proven during the battle against the hometown militia. Wang Haishan led the fifth squad in a frontal attack, achieving a great victory by pursuing the enemy to the frontline of Dong Cunrui and the sixth squad, capturing the commander of the hometown militia. From then on, Wang Haishan no longer looked at Dong Cunrui with respect. Zou Ergou, a liberating soldier of the sixth squad, gradually received baptism and transformation in the revolutionary melting pot, but his growth was inconsistent. Although he wanted to join the Party and even proactively paid party dues to Dong Cunrui twice, his motives were not pure; during the battle at Yunding Peak, facing the enemy's intense firepower, he panicked and froze, failing to destroy the stronghold in time, almost jeopardizing the assault; due to Zou Ergou's serious negligence, all the soldiers of the fifth squad were sacrificed except for Wang Haishan. Wang Haishan was devastated. Wang Haishan wanted to reorganize the fifth squad and set his sights on Zhi Zhenbiao, who was versed in tactics, and Liu Yulin, who was skilled in sniping. Liu Yulin resolutely refused to go, but Zhi Zhenbiao was somewhat tempted, as it had once been his dream to become a member of the fifth squad. Unexpectedly, Dong Cunrui brought the entire sixth squad to Wang Haishan, allowing him to choose at will. Wang Haishan was moved. Stubborn Dong Cunrui held onto a strong determination; he discovered the characteristics of each soldier in the sixth squad during future training and applied them in actual combat. Under the changed leadership of Dong Cunrui, the sixth squad developed a brotherly camaraderie. Under Dong Cunrui's efforts, the sixth squad finally became the elite unit with the strongest combat capability. Dong Cunrui also became an honorable preparatory member of the Communist Party of China. On the other hand, Dong Cunrui developed a deep bond with the local people, including Aunt Niu from Niuzhuang and Zhao Guizhi. The civil girl Xiuer felt a closer connection to Dong Cunrui due to his life-saving grace. Xiuer had an obvious fondness for the simple Dong Cunrui, but the battle-minded Dong Cunrui remained completely unaware of it. During our army's 15-day resistance battle against Chiang Kai-shek's troops' re-invasion of the Jirecha liberated area, Zou Ergou’s cowardly behavior indirectly led to the sacrifice of Comrade Niu Yuhe. Ultimately, Zou Ergou accidentally killed his life-saver, Da Hei. The sacrifice of Niu Yuhe and the death of Da Hei dealt a fatal blow to Zou Ergou. To escape his inner turmoil, Zou Ergou became a deserter, secretly leaving the unit to pursue the peaceful life he longed for. War is brutal; Dong Cunrui’s comrades bravely sacrificed one by one. Dong Cunrui himself gradually became a qualified Communist Party member and the grassroots commander of the troops through the baptism of war. After the Northeast People's Liberation Army's winter offensive ended, the unit Dong Cunrui was in officially changed its designation to the 32nd Division, 96th Regiment, 2nd Battalion, 6th Company, 6th Squad of the Northeast People's Liberation Army. The unit was ordered to take swift and decisive action to eliminate the Kuomintang's 13th Army and liberate all of Rehe to cut off the connections between the enemy forces in North China and Northeast China. In early May, the unit set out from Chaoyang to attack the gateway to the provincial capital of Rehe, Chengde—Longhua. The situation in the city was unclear. In desperation, Dong Cunrui came up with a way to disguise himself as a husband with Xiuer to infiltrate the city for reconnaissance. With the tacit approval of the company commander, Dong Cunrui and Xiuer managed to complete their mission despite difficulties. Finally, in a dire moment, it was actually the awakened Zou Ergou who helped them return to the unit. Zou Ergou, due to the death of his love, Er Ya, devoted himself entirely to the fight. At the regiment's election meeting for the "Blasting Marshal," the well-prepared Dong Cunrui ultimately won the trust of the leaders and all the soldiers with his attitude, and he became the "Blasting Marshal" for the regiment's attack on Longhua Middle School. The battle began. Dong Cunrui led the blasting team to consecutively blow up 4 enemy gun towers and 5 bunkers, successfully completing the task of clearing the outer fortifications of Longhua Middle School. At 3:30 PM, the second general attack began. The sixth company charged toward Longhua Middle School. Dong Cunrui and the members of his blasting team quickly neutralized enemy strongpoints one after another. Just when everyone thought they had completely eliminated the enemy’s strongpoints, suddenly, on a dry bridge above, enemy machine guns sprayed out several shots of deadly fire. At a critical moment, Dong Cunrui desperately dashed to the bottom of the dry bridge. The general assault's attack signal had already been sounded, and comrades began to charge forward; countless comrades were about to fall under the firepower of the dry bridge. Without hesitation, Dong Cunrui pressed the explosive package against himself with his left hand and pulled the fuse. Amid the hissing sound of the fuse, Dong Cunrui turned back and loudly shouted to our troops, "For the new China, advance!" With a deafening explosion, the bridge-type stronghold was obliterated. A large number of follow-up troops charged into Longhua Middle School on the blood-stained ground, annihilating the remaining enemy, and the red flag was raised in Longhua City, liberating it! Dong Cunrui and his comrades paved the way for victory in the advance toward the liberation of all of China with their blood and lives.
