Friends Zhang Hualin, Lin Qiang, Shu Fan, and Miao Fei, who graduated from the same university and class, began their journalism careers in Beijing. Zhang Hualin's girlfriend, He Qi, was unwilling to part with him. Despite her parents' opposition, she quit her job and came to Beijing to be with him. Moved, Hualin was troubled about how to settle He Qi. With the help of Shu Fan and others, Hualin rented a small place and married He Qi. Soon after, He Qi became pregnant. For the sake of their livelihood, Hualin decided to work in "sideline jobs" with Miao Fei. He Qi disagreed, leading to their first argument. Hualin and Lin Qiang were sent by the newspaper to report on a disaster area. They uncovered a case of embezzlement of poverty alleviation funds and impersonation of advanced models. Hualin was injured as a result. As misfortune struck Hualin, he accidentally suffered from gas poisoning. He survived, but He Qi lost the baby. Deeply affected by the continuous blows, Hualin grew depressed and made a surprising move, quitting his job at the newspaper to start a business. Shu Fan was a key player at the television station. While a capable worker, he was lazy and careless in life. He often dealt with ridiculous matters seriously and approached serious matters frivolously, leaving people amused and exasperated. Observing Hualin's success in business, he impulsively registered an advertising company. Unfortunately, he fell victim to a scam, losing both money and opportunity, and almost ended up in jail. From then on, he focused, refrained from wrongdoing, and turned his life around in business, progressing rapidly. However, his personal life remained chaotic. He ignored a female host, Lin Xu, who had feelings for him, while he developed an inappropriate attachment to his friend Zhang Hualin's wife, He Qi, behaving like a gentleman yet deeply entangled in awkwardness and pain. Hualin successfully conducted a marketing plan for the Feida Company, which produced water purifiers, bringing significant economic benefits. This garnered him recognition from the boss, Gu Zhiguang. To strengthen his position, Hualin insisted on bringing Lin Qiang into the business. However, he fell into a trap set by the old-timer, Lu Jun, at Feida, who caught him accepting kickbacks. Unwilling to be betrayed, Zhang Hualin was determined to confront Gu Zhiguang. Unbeknownst to Hualin, at a critical moment, Lin Qiang sided with Gu Zhiguang. The once close friends, Zhang Hualin and Lin Qiang, became enemies. Hualin ignored Lin Qiang's explanations, dismissed his friends' cautions, and angrily left Feida, establishing his own Hengtai Company. Just as business began to thrive, he encountered his old rival, Lu Jun. Lin Qiang revealed Lu Jun's true colors. In his anger, Zhang Hualin sought revenge against Lu Jun, inadvertently pushing him to his death. Hualin's actions outraged his friends, but he had changed fundamentally; he became stubborn and unscrupulous. He Qi was extremely disappointed in him, and their marriage faced serious threats. Shu Fan's investigation program, "News Investigation," became a popular show at the station, greatly welcomed by audiences. One day, he received a complaint from a factory about fraudulent activities by a company in Beijing. Shu Fan decided to investigate personally. Aware that this was related to Hualin, He Qi tried to dissuade Shu Fan and inform him of the truth. However, Shu Fan left without a word and boarded a westbound train that night. Helpless, He Qi had no choice but to seek out Hualin, who had been living separately from her. Hualin dismissed her concerns. In a fit of rage, He Qi finally exploded. Under her questioning and scorn, Hualin's conscience awakened, and he decided to personally rectify the situation and make amends. Just then, the tragic news arrived: Shu Fan died in a car accident while on assignment... Shu Fan's death shocked Hualin and nearly caused him to crumble. At Shu Fan's funeral, former classmates and friends Zhang Hualin, Lin Qiang, Miao Fei, and He Qi faced their deceased friend, trembling with grief and overwhelming pain, rigorously questioning their own souls: once, they were rich in friendship, ideals, and love; now, despite their wealth, they found themselves with nothing but money. Money can be regained; friendships, however, once lost, cannot be easily restored...
