Adapted from "Conscription." During the civil war, the Kuomintang conducted large-scale conscription across the country to expand its troops. In Longyin Town, Sichuan, a series of stories driven by conscription unfold: "The Number One Protector" Wang Baozhang (played by Li Baotian) deceives superiors and subordinates for personal gain; the district conscription working team leader, Captain Lu (played by Li Chaoyou), exploits and seizes women, committing all sorts of evils; the rogue proletarian Pan Tuobei (played by Liu Yajin) acts as an accomplice; the local wealthy landowner Li Laoshuan (played by Wang Daan) is forced to send his third son to be a boy scout; the kind and just sister-in-law (played by Hou Jilin) has no choice but to greet Wang Baozhang with a smile; the hired laborer Jiang Dagu (played by Jiang Dagu) is driven into the wilderness; to avoid "marriage donations," Li Laoshuan marries his youngest daughter (played by Xie Run) to Pan Tuobei, while the sister-in-law becomes Captain Lu's underground wife, giving birth to a daughter.
