During the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, foreign troubles were frequent and internal strife was severe. The four disciples of the martial arts world: Cold Blood (Ren Quan), Ruthless (Wu Qilong), Iron Hand (Wang Jiusheng), and Chasing Fate (Lu Xingyu), under the guidance of their master Zhuge Houzhi (Dong Zhihua), became extraordinary heroes, dedicated to helping the emperor quell troubles at the borders. Cold Blood gets into a quarrel with Princess Ning'an (Fan Bingbing) and, during a fight, is struck by Wen Shian (Gao Feng). His secret admirer, Ya Feng (Zuo Xiaoqing), is heartbroken, but the emperor cannot understand why his daughter likes a brash man from the martial arts world. When the princess is kidnapped while traveling, Cold Blood risks his life to save her. To repay Cold Blood, the princess decides to marry Tolo (Chen Jun). The Japanese man Ito (Wu Qilong) pretends to be Ruthless's companion, robbing rich merchants and seizing government treasury silver. Wrongly accused, Ruthless confronts Ito, only to be ridiculed and have Ya Feng taken hostage to force Ruthless to submit. Cold Blood ventures alone into a prison to rescue both Ruthless and Ya Feng. The four brothers fall into a trap, leading to the slaughter of a hundred people at their villa. The master vows to eliminate the Lantern Festival, sending the four disciples on separate paths to investigate, as bloody chaos is set to unfold in the martial arts world...
