Tong Lishi (played by Liang Ming) lost her husband early and lives a dependent life with her daughter, Daxiang (played by Li Meng). The lonely mother and daughter go to the city to seek refuge with their aunt, Sun Dama (played by Tian Taixuan), where they meet a man named Shang Youlin (played by Li Wei). The kind Shang Youlin often helps the struggling Tong Lishi, and between their interactions, genuine feelings gradually develop between them.
The greedy and sinister Sun Dama, in collusion with her husband, Cui Huzi (played by Cui Chaoming), and Yanzhi Hu (played by Li Lingyun), schemes to sell Daxiang to the brothel run by the couple, and Daxiang thus becomes a prostitute. Witnessing her daughter suffer inhumane treatment, a desperate Tong Lishi chooses to jump into the river to end her life. However, Shang Youlin does not lose hope; he tries various ways to redeem Daxiang, but ultimately fails. In 1949, with the liberation of Beiping, the arrival of the Liberation Army finally grants Daxiang her freedom.
