From 1978 to 2009, these thirty years were a period of immense change and turbulence in China. Through the story of Aunt Yao's family, it captures not only their lives but also the resilient, vibrant, and emotionally stirring struggle that the Chinese people experienced during these three decades. In 1978, Chongqing. Aunt Yao, pregnant and accompanied by her five children, kneels at the factory gate to demand justice for her husband, Uncle Yao, who was fired due to alcoholism. After much effort, she convinces the factory director to allow their eldest son to take over Uncle Yao's job when he grows up, but amidst this turmoil, she gives birth to twins at the factory gate. Aunt Yao and Uncle Yao originally had five children. The first four were named after the phrase "prosperity and flourishing": the eldest Lin Fan, the second Lin Rong, the third Lin Chang, and the fourth Lin Sheng, all boys, while the fifth, Lin Jing, is a silent and stubborn little girl. With too many children, their family was already struggling, and now they've lost their main breadwinner—Uncle Yao, who could no longer work due to alcohol poisoning. Aunt Yao must rise to support the family. She couldn't afford to keep both newborn twins and had to give one away. However, on the way to give one up, she lost one twin, enduring immense grief as she brought the surviving one home, who became the sixth child of the Lin family. Aunt Yao starts working hard with her five children, making and selling bean paste, but she lacks the funds to buy raw materials and cannot escape harassment from the local supply and marketing manager, Old Liu. Moreover, she faces attacks and insults from Aunt Wu, who also sells bean paste. Lin Jianshe, her young brother-in-law, protects Aunt Yao's dignity with his fists but ends up attracting more gossip. Rumors spread that Aunt Yao is like Pan Jinlian, Old Liu like Ximen Qing, Uncle Yao like Wu Dalang, while Lin Jianshe is portrayed as the one Aunt Yao seduces, Wu Song. After several failed attempts to quit drinking, Uncle Yao becomes irritated, and conflicts with Lin Jianshe turn into jokes on the street. In anger, Lin Jianshe shatters the windows of those spreading rumors and confronts Old Liu. However, Aunt Yao stops him because Old Liu did indeed help the Lin family. After being released from detention, Lin Jianshe does not return home but instead leaves for distant places. Because of the gossip, Aunt Yao also creates a foe within the family, which is Lin Jing. Lin Jing grows to hate Aunt Yao for the reputation she has given their siblings. Aunt Yao utilizes her survival skills as a woman to stubbornly raise all six children. The eldest, Lin Fan, turns eighteen and is expected to take Uncle Yao's place in the factory; however, he is solely focused on studying and aspires to go to university, which the family can't afford, leading to him being forced to burn his acceptance letter. The second child, Lin Rong, is vain and steals a classmate's new clothes, causing trouble with the classmate's brother. The third and fourth children, Lin Chang and Lin Sheng, have the best relationship and are always playful troublemakers. When Lin Rong is harassed by a thug, Lin Chang and Lin Sheng come to her rescue, but Lin Fan accidentally kills the thug during the altercation. Aunt Yao decides that Lin Fan must become the family's economic support and hope; he cannot go to prison, leading her to draw lots among the other children to find out who would take the blame for Lin Fan. The result is that Lin Sheng draws the short straw, but out of fear, he secretly swaps it with Lin Chang, who then goes to prison, changing both their lives forever. Afterwards, Aunt Yao's worries never cease. Lin Rong causes a scandal with a young painter named Ding Song. When Ding Song draws nudes of her, someone discovers it, and her nakedness is posted on the bulletin board. To protect Ding Song, Lin Rong claims it was her who forced him, but societal pressure causes Lin Rong to become mentally unstable, and for years she doesn't dare step outside, spending her days knitting while accompanied by a cat. Lin Sheng steals factory parts to earn money for the family but gets caught when Aunt Yao discovers it and faces the factory's wrath, only to be arrested by Lin Fan, who is on duty. This results in Lin Fan being fired from the factory. Lin Jing has developed a passion for piano and displays immense musical talent. Aunt Yao, with a heavy heart, buys Lin Jing an electronic piano but mistakenly accuses her of stealing money from the family to buy it, causing humiliation. Lin Jing smashes the electronic piano and becomes the person who hates Aunt Yao the most. Even Uncle Yao, after undergoing emergency treatment for alcohol poisoning, encounters his former lover, Feng Yuting, and under his mother’s provocation, decides to divorce Aunt Yao to live with Feng Yuting, trying to regain his manhood. However, Feng Yuting deceitfully takes all his money, and Uncle Yao realizes he cannot live without Aunt Yao. Lin Jianshe returns again, this time in glory, as he has become a factory director. He seeks revenge on Old Liu and Aunt Wu while wanting to take Aunt Yao and her family away from Chongqing to live at his factory. However, Aunt Yao ultimately refuses, unable to let go of Lin Chang who is in prison, hoping for the return of their lost seventh child, and more importantly, because she cannot leave her hometown where she grew up. Lin Jianshe departs sadly.
