The story of this drama begins in the late 1970s and early 1980s, spanning roughly over two decades until the late 1990s. In 1977, a lively scene unfolded on the campus of Northern University in Beijing, where a group of "Old Three Sessions" members, having endured the trials of life, regained their long-desired opportunity for education. They were about to rewrite the history of their lost youth with their unique life experiences and vibrant passion for life, using this as a starting point. Throughout the years, they continuously learned about and discovered themselves, searching for and practicing their life ideals, thus becoming the backbone of our society today, represented by the distinct "Class of '77" and "Class of '78." This ensemble piece possesses rich cultural characteristics of Beijing, making it difficult to extract a complete story or plot. The script focuses on how individuals with vastly different personalities and ways of behaving embark on meaningful lives. In this school enrollment scene, you may no longer see such a "mixed bag brigade." The first to arrive is a hurried figure in a yellow coat, who, while considering himself a professional sociologist, acknowledges his lineage as a typical royal descendant and has two hilariously charismatic siblings steeped in Beijing culture. However, he looks down on the old-fashioned practices of the past. To signal his self-awareness, he renames himself Ding Yifu, constantly pondering universal issues such as population control, desert management, and energy shortages. He exhaustively pursues his mission, ultimately leading to a separation from his wife, but his pure attitude towards life and persistent pursuit of ideals endears him to everyone, evoking smiles and helping others appreciate the flavors of life and the glimmers of hope. Our group of optimistically ordinary people also includes Cao Jiajue, who is witty and wise; He Yi, whose firm and resilient attitude stems from past emotional wounds; Suo Ming, a high-ranking official's son who, after one life mistake, transformed his usual philosophy into something more mature and tolerant; and Tian Laer, who arrived from the countryside carrying bundles of garlic, overcoming severe financial difficulties with a simple and optimistic spirit, inspiring those around him. Gu Yu places her faith in the belief that changing one’s fate relies solely on oneself, while the kind-hearted and virtuous Zong Jin longs for her deceased husband, cherishing a deep affection for the Northeast, as her husband forever remains in that cherished land where their life journey began... Alongside these individuals, there are others whose lives and fates are closely intertwined. Some have never experienced the turbulence that these "Old Three Sessions" members have indelibly felt. Yet they are captivated by and inherit Beijing's rich cultural background. A group of ordinary people fully experiencing life and benefiting from it displays unique character and vibrancy, becoming a highlight within the seemingly mundane lives, embodying the charm of Beijing culture and the pursuit and obsession with it through their words, actions, and ways of thinking, revitalizing a courtyard in the heart of the capital.
