It tells the story of several young farmers venturing into the big city. These young people neither suffer through trials only to become successful bosses nor endure endless bullying in the city, but instead, they lead a very realistic "simple life." As director Wu Fei puts it, this film is different from the images of successful farmers like Liu Laogen and Ma Dashuai: “The difficulty with farmer-themed stories lies in their authenticity. Zhao Benshan's 'Liu Laogen' and 'Ma Dashuai' represent some successful farmer images, but most farmers live quite ordinary lives. 'I Am a Farmer' focuses on depicting young people from rural areas coming to the city. I don't want to prescribe solutions for them; they are part of the tens of millions of marginalized individuals migrating to cities each year, and their lives are inherently dramatic, needing no embellishment.” Wu Fei dares to say this because he himself comes from a farming background. To help young actors gain a tangible understanding, he even took several of them to "the countryside to farm" and experience life. Wu Fei believes this is part of their sincerity: “Our creative perspective is at eye level, or friend-like, rather than looking down from above. We want to portray this group of people who come from rural areas and want to settle in the city with a sense of friendship and equal concern.”
