The story takes place in the early twentieth century. In search of the truth to save the nation and its people, Zhou Enlai (played by Zhu Yawen), Deng Xixian (played by Zhong Qiu), and a group of progressive youths came to France for work-study. Deng Xixian was advised to withdraw by the school due to insufficient tuition fees, and from then on, he and his companions began their work-study life in a foreign land. In 1921, Zhou Enlai, Zhao Shiyan (played by Li Liang), and others established the Paris Communist Group, and the Chen brothers started to embrace Marxism under their influence. The Beiyang warlords stopped support for Chinese students studying in France.
