In 1925, after the war in Northeast China had just ceased, Fengling Town, located by the Songhua River, lay deep within the realm of mountains and rivers, where people from all walks of life mingled. The Ma and Feng families in Fengling Town had been feuding for generations. The patriarch of the Feng family, nearing the end of his days, wanted to find a wife for his mentally challenged son, Feng Luzi, before his passing. Feng Luzi had a crush on the daughter of Mr. Zhou, the teacher in town, named Heiguo, but Mr. Zhou had promised Heiguo to Ma Wan Hai, the son of Old Master Ma. After graduating from medical university, Ma Wan Hai was forced to join the army. He received a letter from his father and used a trick to escape back from Fengtian. Upon hearing about the feud between the two families, he secretly colluded with the bandit Xiaobeifeng to rob the Feng family, leading to their downfall. Not long after, both Old Master Feng and Old Master Ma passed away, and surprisingly, Feng Luzi’s mental state improved; it turned out he had been pretending to be foolish to avoid disaster. Although Ma Wan Hai had ruined the Feng family, he ended up losing his wealth as well. Subsequently, Feng and Ma families took in orphans Ben Er and Qiu Er. Having grown up together, Ben Er and Qiu Er were a source of great trouble for their respective families, Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai. With the Japanese army invading, Colonel Ozaki led troops into Fengling Crossing. He appeared gentle and amiable, yet immediately implemented brutal policies, forcibly enforcing a system of slavery education and executed Mr. Zhou. Heiguo, seeking revenge for her country, joined Xiaobeifeng’s mountain bandits. The brothers under Xiaobeifeng were influenced by Heiguo’s anti-Japanese sentiments and pushed her to become their leader. Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai were also compelled to go to the mountains. Although Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai did not publicly resist the Japanese, they secretly competed against each other. Various tricks were employed against Colonel Ozaki, making him appear foolish. Ozaki tried every possible way to capture the two, but Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai, in a battle of wits and skills, not only avoided capture but also repeatedly thwarted Ozaki’s plans, resulting in his superior’s dissatisfaction with him. Their resistance against the Japanese became a well-known story in Fengling Town, and Commander He of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army hoped to develop their forces into a unit of the resistance. However, both were skeptical about joining. With no way to confront the Japanese army directly, they ended up integrating into the resistance with Heiguo. Ozaki plotted to capture the three together, but despite various torturous methods in prison, he could not force them to surrender. In desperation, Ozaki pressured Ma Wan Hai into shooting Feng Luzi, but Ma Wan Hai, having previously discovered that Feng Luzi's heart was on the right side during a quarrel, helped him escape disaster. Feng Luzi, though surviving a great ordeal, was severely injured, and Heiguo and Ma Wan Hai risked their lives to get him to a hospital in Harbin. Ma Wan Hai operated on Feng Luzi, and when the doctor changed Feng Luzi's bandages, he learned his heart was on the right side. Ma Wan Hai, knowing this secret, had saved his life at a critical moment, leaving Feng Luzi feeling deeply guilty towards him. The anti-Japanese united front fell into dire straits; Commander He heroically sacrificed himself, and the united front splintered. The Japanese army ruthlessly swept through Yan Chimountain and the stronghold of Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai. Ben Er, under Ozaki’s oppressive force, became a traitor, only to be killed by his beloved Qiu Er. Heiguo was captured and died with great dignity. Soon after, Ozaki found many steel helmets of missing Japanese soldiers in Heiguo's grave, laughing maniacally in front of the tomb... Eventually, Ozaki was driven insane by the torment inflicted by Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai, acting strangely in the barracks and suffering from paranoia. He was reassigned and sent back to his home country. While riding through the snowy fields, he suddenly saw two fine horses galloping in the snow, which turned out to be Feng Luzi and Ma Wan Hai singing the Eastern folk song "The Great Earth and Sky..."
