In the autumn and winter of 1946, the struggle between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party in the Central Plains had reached a highly tense stage. Zhou Xiaofeng, then a major general and commander of the Kuomintang's 349th Brigade, was actually an underground party member directly dispatched by Yan'an, with a single line of contact. His task was to incite an uprising among the New Ninth Army led by Guo Jinqiu, but unexpectedly, the 349th Brigade rose in revolt early under the leadership of another group of underground party members during the enemy's attack on the Tongniu Military District. This group of underground party members was commissioned by the military district's enemy work department. Zhou Xiaofeng felt puzzled about the timing of the 349th Brigade's uprising, but he couldn't stop it, so he pretended to be held hostage to participate in the uprising and then withdrew from the battlefield, being reassigned to the interior of the Tongniu Military District at Meirong Pass for reorganization. The subsequent developments proved that the 349th Brigade’s uprising was indeed significant. The 24 underground party leaders, led by Chief of Staff Jiao, were ambushed by the enemy while heading to a meeting at the military district, and all were sacrificed. This was originally part of the enemy's conspiracy, orchestrated by an enemy agent known as "Wild Wolf" who had infiltrated our party, resulting in the sacrifice of all underground party members in the 349th Brigade before it could be reorganized, effectively returning the unit to the Kuomintang forces. Its future was thus determined solely by Zhou Xiaofeng’s whims. The Military Bureau not only had assassins lurking around Zhou Xiaofeng, but at this moment, it also mobilized special forces to infiltrate near Meirong Pass. The leader, Lin Xuefei, had once been Zhou Xiaofeng's child bride; she loved him deeply but could not have him, leading to a complex mix of love and hatred. "Wild Wolf" was well aware of his actions; once he aligned himself with the Communist Party, he would immediately face certain death. Minister Meng of the military district's enemy work department was unaware of Zhou Xiaofeng’s identity as a Communist Party member and ordered the newly appointed political commissar Wang Xiaonong and the director of the political department, Xia Ying, to execute him on the spot if they discovered he showed any signs of returning to the Kuomintang. They even stationed a guard platoon at the headquarters of the 349th Brigade for this purpose. Xia Ying had a blood debt with him for killing her husband, and it was inevitable that she would harbor suspicions and make things difficult for him; adding to the troubles was that at this moment, the daughter of the traitor Yi Bingchuan, Yi Zhimai, whom Zhou Xiaofeng had killed during the war, had come to seek revenge. Besides their enmity, she was also the only woman Zhou Xiaofeng truly loved, being the sister of his deceased wife, Yi Zhilan! In this way, Zhou Xiaofeng found himself mired in a crisis of national resentment and personal entanglements. Zhou Xiaofeng was acutely aware of his perilous situation. He bore the heavy responsibility of inciting an uprising of over 30,000 soldiers from the New Ninth Army, but he could not discern who among those around him were friends or foes. The only people he could trust and command, and who could deploy all the underground party members in the military district during this tense period, were Commander Zhang and Commissar Chen, along with Minister Meng. Was "Wild Wolf" one of them? At this point, even Yan'an had doubts, which meant the military district could not reveal Zhou Xiaofeng’s true identity and mission. He had to fight alone and tread carefully, needing to disguise himself so that neither the enemy nor the military district would uncover or misinterpret his intentions. He also needed to investigate and eliminate "Wild Wolf," understand the enemy's conspiracy, evade Yi Zhimai's revenge, and protect Wang Xiaonong and Xia Ying within the 349th Brigade. The difficulty of this test for Zhou Xiaofeng was self-evident. In such circumstances, the only help and understanding he could find came from his secretary, Liu Fangxia, another underground party member sent from Yan'an. To facilitate communication, they pretended to be married. Zhou Xiaofeng felt deeply grateful for her and was filled with guilt. The developments in the battle turned out to be unexpected. The New Ninth Army and the enemy's 78th Army, totaling 70,000 troops, encircled our Zhang-Chen column of 20,000 troops, suddenly placing the stationed 349th Brigade at a critical position. Both sides recognized the importance of the 349th Brigade and exerted all efforts to win it over. The chips that Nanjing could offer included countless amounts of money and high official positions, while the Communist Party had neither money nor power to promise but only the hearts and spirit of the people. This was precisely the trap set by "Wild Wolf"; the enemy used coercion and temptation, believing victory was in their grasp. Faced with such a crucial issue, Zhou Xiaofeng displayed extraordinary wisdom and courage, leading all the officers and soldiers of the brigade to stand with the Communist Party, identifying and killing the infiltrating enemy agent "Wild Wolf," and eliminating the enemy's special organization all at once. The Communist Party's forces took the initiative, leading to a deep hatred from Nanjing, who sought to eliminate him swiftly. In order to achieve a fundamental shift in the battle situation, Zhou Xiaofeng and Wang Xiaonong went to the New Ninth Army to persuade Commander Guo Jinqiu to revolt. Unfortunately, they were betrayed by their friend, military chief of staff Tian Dan. To protect Guo Jinqiu, Zhou Xiaofeng and Wang Xiaonong were captured by the enemy and sent to Nanjing, where they remained steadfast and unyielding until they were executed at the Rain Flower Terrace in Nanjing. Their capture and sacrifice ultimately resolved Guo Jinqiu’s resolve to lead the entire New Ninth Army in revolt, transforming the Communist Party's absolute disadvantage of 20,000 troops into the absolute advantage of 60,000 troops from the Zhang-Chen column and the New Ninth Army against the 30,000 troops of the Kuomintang's 78th Army. The enemy was completely annihilated, and the blood of the martyrs forged the victory of the revolution, becoming a monument to the success of the Chinese revolution.
