On January 31, 1949, Beijing was peacefully liberated. Feng Tianxiang, the chief of staff of a certain division of the People's Liberation Army, was appointed as the deputy director of Office 309, responsible for the security of the Central Committee and Chairman Mao, as well as democratic figures, and assisting the Central Committee in preparing for the founding of the country. Meanwhile, in Nanjing, Mao Renfeng appointed veteran agent Duan Yunfei as the new head of the Beijing station, ordering him to locate the specific whereabouts of the Central Committee and Mao Zedong, and to carry out sabotage activities.
