Centering around a family with the surname Ma, the story begins with the corruption case of the family's youngest son, Ma Liang, dramatically depicting the state of a family facing disaster, thus showcasing a picture of the lives of lower-class citizens in 1990s China and shaping the characters of a group of ordinary people. The protagonist, Ma Chao, finds his younger brother Ma Liang, who risks everything for a happy life with his girlfriend Zhang Weige by hiding 100,000 yuan of embezzled public funds with her, leading to his imprisonment. In order to repay his brother's embezzlement, Ma Chao borrows money everywhere, resulting in a car accident that kills his sister Ma Xiaoyun’s fiancé, Fu Baiqiang, leaving Xiaoyun pregnant and her in-laws heartbroken; Ma's mother, angry over her younger son’s sentencing, dies of anger, revealing on her deathbed to Ma Chao that Ma Liang is his half-brother with a different father, whose real father is Mr. Zhang from the convenience store downstairs; Mr. Zhang, in order to alleviate the Ma family's financial pressure, has to sell off his property and leave home; meanwhile, Ma Chao falls into an emotional vortex by borrowing money from an ex-girlfriend, leading to a fallout with his daughter and a separation from his wife, Gong Yuzhuo; Zhang Weige, to fulfill her promise to Ma Liang, clings to that 100,000 yuan and opens a photography studio with the embezzled money, but three years later, when Ma Liang is released from prison, she not only fails to keep the money but incurs debt, forcing her to sell her body to fulfill her promise to Ma Liang.
