At the end of 1944, the Japanese and puppet autumn sweep and betrayal by traitors plunged Baicheng into difficulty. Jiang Mangen and underground party member Peng Xiunu were urgently tasked with entering Baicheng. Mangen had no experience in underground struggle, acted recklessly and impulsively, continuously deviating from organizational plans, raising suspicions from the Japanese and the puppet police chief Chu Qiang, which ultimately led to Xiunu's death. To complete the mission, he had to seek help from his enemy, his father's old friend—the puppet county chief Liao Yiqing. It turns out that when Baicheng fell, Jiang's father, then the city defense commander, decided to sacrifice himself to allow Liao to feign surrender to ensure the safety of the civilians. With Liao's help, Mangen established connections with various local forces and utilized bandits to creatively complete various tasks, establishing a communication station in Baicheng. After the Japanese surrendered, Mangen began to incite Liao Yiqing against Chu Qiang, and the military intelligence identity of Liao's daughter, Chunxiao, also came to light. Liao Yiqing wanted to peacefully liberate Baicheng, while Chu Qiang coerced him with force. Mangen and Chunxiao rushed to rescue, and Chunxiao took a bullet for Mangen, ultimately resulting in Chu Qiang being shot dead by Mangen. Mangen returned to the army and embarked on the journey of liberating the entire country.
