Shuo Lan (played by Wang Mingquan) is a beloved princess who enjoys immense favor; everyone caters to her whims, and her domineering personality even makes the emperor wary of her. Since marrying the embroidery merchant Ning Fengde (played by Shi Xiu), she feels she has lowered herself but believes her husband's and his family's status has grown because of her. The couple has a son, Ning Maochun (played by Huang Zongze), and Shuo Lan has always wanted to find a talented and virtuous woman for him to marry. However, he ends up marrying Tian Li (played by Hu Xing'er), the daughter of a bandit king. On the day of the wedding, Tian Li hides in a wedding chair with her father to evade capture by the authorities and is sent to the Ning family as a bride. Tian Li decides to play along and deceive the Ning family, hoping to use her special status as a princess to rescue her imprisoned father. Shuo Lan encounters the equally fiery Tian Li, and thus begins a fierce battle between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.
