Villager Jiang Daya (Zhang Fengyi) from the Lanqiaobu Town in the Aotu Mountain area encounters a Japanese bombing on the way to the wedding. Only he, the bride Han Chunyun (Li Lin), fellow townsman Chen Mohan (Sun Song), and Zhu Yudao (Lin Yongjian) escape by chance. In their life choices, Jiang Daya and Zhu Yudao want to join the Kuomintang, but end up in the New Fourth Army; while Chen Mohan and Han Chunyun want to join the New Fourth Army, only to be conscripted by the Kuomintang. Their life circumstances thus change: under the mentorship of Commander Yang Tinghui (Li Xuejian), Jiang Daya grows into a leader of the New Fourth Army, but his bad habits attract criticism from some comrades: Zhang Pujing feels he lacks ideological awareness, and Dou Yuquan thinks he is inexperienced. Meanwhile, Jiang Gubei (Yu Hewei) resents Jiang Daya for expressing affection towards propaganda officer Dongfang Wenxin (Yin Tao), which causes many setbacks for Jiang Daya. At the same time, Chen Mohan and Han Chunyun find their respective positions within the Kuomintang army. Once fellow townsmen, they become both enemies and friends, adapting to the changing times... This film depicts the life experiences of the protagonists from the War of Resistance against Japan to the Cultural Revolution over more than forty years. This film is adapted from Xu Guixiang's novel of the same name, which won the sixth "Mao Dun Literature Prize."
