Han Susan is an unfortunate woman. During those tumultuous years, she wandered alone to a rural area in the northwest, where the kind Wu mother took Susan in. Unexpectedly, her son Wu Jinwang—a good-for-nothing old bachelor—took advantage of his power and raped Susan. Not long after, Susan found herself pregnant and had no choice but to marry Jinwang. Soon after, her sons Yongnan and Yongqiang were born, but Jinwang continued to indulge in drinking and entertainment, neglecting his family. The couple often quarreled and fought every few days. Susan contemplated divorce several times, but ultimately endured for the sake of the children and her mother-in-law's pleas.
A blacksmith named Zhao Dalong, who repaired farm tools, came to the village. This warm-hearted and capable young man took pity on and grew fond of Susan, and they started a relationship. Rumors about Susan and Dalong's affair spread in the village; upon hearing this, Jinwang brutally beat Susan, causing her to fall ill. After Susan's persuasion, Dalong left the village. Jinwang eventually died from his illness, and upon hearing the news, Dalong proposed to Susan. She prepared to move to town with her children. However, Yongnan resolutely refused to go with her and pleaded with his mother not to leave, but Susan hardened her heart and went with Dalong. This led to a sudden estrangement and coldness between Yongnan and his mother.
Over a decade passed, and Yongnan, now a university graduate, became an excellent pathologist. He was determined to uncover the truth behind his father's death. By chance, he discovered that his father's cause of death closely resembled poisoning from a certain chemical substance. Just as the village was planning to construct a road, the cemetery was to be moved. After an autopsy, it was confirmed that Jinwang had indeed died from poisoning. Under Yongnan's pressing, Susan finally confessed everything to her son: she had poisoned her husband to escape the tragic marriage... In order to uphold social justice and the dignity of the law, after intense ideological struggles, despite facing numerous obstacles and criticism, Yongnan brought his biological mother to court. During this process, he experienced misunderstandings from relatives, betrayal from friends, and disdain from outsiders... He had moments of regret, hesitation, and even thought about giving up. However, he ultimately solidified his belief that "the law is greater than emotions."
