The story takes place in the late 1970s at the Hongxing Machinery Factory, a state-owned enterprise. Jin Yong (played by Jiang Wu) is recognized as a technical expert and a skilled worker. He works in the workshop with his friend Du Zhiming (played by Wang Zhifei), his apprentice Lin Yue (played by Zhao Qian), tool keeper Feng Xinli (played by Liang Xin), and workshop clerk Kong Lingqin (played by Wang Lan).
