In the late Qing Dynasty, the silk merchant Hong Fuqi, one of the "Eight Bulls" in Nanxun, had his children around him. Although his first wife passed away early, he was fortunate to marry a gentle and virtuous concubine who ran a boat restaurant. A golden plaque reading "Hong Fuqi Tian" hung high at their door. However, their seemingly happy family was hiding a crisis: the illegitimate son brought by the concubine, Hong Wenlu, was not his biological child, which made Fuqi treat him differently. Wenlu was psychologically insecure and vengeful, always thinking of taking over the family property by setting traps.
The eldest son, Wen Guang, joined the revolutionary party, and Wenlu secretly reported him to the authorities, leading to Wen Guang's misfortune, which in turn implicated the whole family. At that time, Hong Fuqi's daughter Wenwei fell in love with a servant, Jin Bao, and became pregnant. Wenlu pretended to be a good person and helped Wenwei elope with Jin Bao, using the opportunity to eliminate his last obstacle to usurp the family fortune. Then, Wenlu directly harmed Fuqi, who had fled to another town to escape, and took all of the Hong family's assets for himself. Wenlu's biological mother witnessed this horrific scene and went mad from shock. During Wenwei and Jin Bao's escape, they got separated, and when Wenwei returned to Nanxun, she discovered that her family had been destroyed. Misunderstanding that her lover, Jin Bao, was involved, she attempted to drown herself but was saved by a fisherman, Peng Hai. To repay him, she married him and had a son, transforming from a rich young lady into a poor ship's wife. However, Wenlu discovered that Wenwei was still alive and sought to eliminate her, and Peng Hai sacrificed himself to protect Wenwei and their child.
In the early years of the Republic of China, Hong Wenlu had transformed into Xu Tianlu, a wealthy merchant from Jinling, while Jin Bao returned from studying in America to help "the only heir of the Hong family," Tianlu, manage his business. At this time, Wenwei also brought her second son to Nanjing, running a struggling boat restaurant with no other desires but to live a stable life, crossing paths with her early lover several times. The famous actress Bai Qianru had become a concubine of Xu Tianlu, and although Wen Guang, who had survived past tribulations, was working in the government, he could only sigh at the fleeting nature of past love. The unpredictability of life led to endless cycles of revenge. Wenwei's son, Peng Jiayang, accidentally encountered his enemy Tianlu's daughter, Da Rong, who fell in love with Jiayang, while Jiayang's heart belonged to another girl, Sha Hong...
Everything was revealed due to the coincidental meeting between Wenwei and the mad concubine. Faced with Tianlu's renewed violence, Wenwei, unable to bear it any longer, decided to sacrifice her son's lifelong happiness by marrying her enemy's daughter, Da Rong, which made Tianlu suffer immensely and left him helpless. However, the innocent Da Rong was consumed by the flames of revenge. At the sight of Da Rong's death, Tianlu completely broke down, and Wenwei also had an epiphany, realizing that endless vengeance could not resolve all issues, and only love could dispel hate, only forgiveness could dilute grievances...
