The film tells the story of the Zhou sisters, Xu Yanxiang (played by Yuan Mei) and Zhou Biying (played by Zhang Qing). Separated in childhood, the sisters have led completely different lives. Xu Yanxiang has fallen into hardship, while Zhou Biying became a popular movie star after receiving an education abroad. Each sister possesses a piece of jade pendant that can be combined to form a complete pattern. The Zhou family has a very loyal butler who has served them for many years. The second Mrs. Zhou is Zhou Biying's biological mother, who, in order to fight for inheritance, falsely accuses the first Mrs. Zhou and the butler of having an affair, claiming that Xu Yanxiang is an illegitimate child. Mr. Zhou falls for the plot, writing a will that leaves all his property to the second Mrs. Zhou, and drives away the butler, the eldest daughter, and the first Mrs. Zhou.
