After their father's death in a car accident, their mother and her five daughters: Hongmei, Honglan, Hongzhu, Hongju, and Wumei live in a small dwelling called "Fukangli" by the Nanjiang River. The mother particularly dotes on Wumei, planning to live with her in the old house, hoping that Wumei will take care of her in her old age. This arrangement causes dissatisfaction among the four older sisters, as it means they will not be able to spend their later years with their mother. The tense family dynamics are reflected in the relationships among the sisters, and the house becomes a complicated knot in their hearts.
