Yang Fan (played by Li Jiahang), Qi Zhansheng (played by Wan Peixin), and Wang Xiaobing (played by Jiang Han) grew up in the resource-scarce and conservative era of the 1970s, but inherited the simple kindness, perseverance, and the essence of Chinese culture from their parents. In the 1980s and 90s, the three brothers experienced the wave of reform and opening up alongside the people of China: educational reform, where universities no longer guaranteed job assignments; institutional reform, breaking the iron rice bowl to encourage private economy; industrial reform, with technological innovation and structural adjustments leading to layoffs and re-employment. At the same time, Qi Zhansheng's first love, Yunduo, mysteriously disappears, while Guan Xianghong, who has been secretly in love with him, relentlessly pursues him; due to pressure from reality, Wang Xiaobing separates from Guan Xueqing; and Yang Fan meets the lively and cheerful Tan Yanfei at his lowest point. The confusion about their personal futures and the entanglements in family and love leave the three of them at a loss. However, the post-70s generation is resilient and doesn't give up easily; they have an insatiable desire for new things. The three brothers steadily rise from the bottom to become elites in the business world, each finding their spiritual home with the unique spirit of tolerance, reflection, and courage after knowing shame that characterizes the post-70s generation.
